Public Risk Management Internship Program
CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR SUMMER 2010
* An Innovative Internship in Injury Prevention in our National Parks! *
Students interested in public health, behavioral sciences, communications, wilderness and recreational risk management, wilderness medicine, safety studies, and/or injury epidemiology are encouraged to apply_
What is the Internship?
• A 3-6 month assignment at a park working on a risk management project to support park injury prevention efforts and enhance visitor experience
• Attendance at an intensive, highly specialized, weeklong training in June covering topics such as injury epidemiology, task planning, data collection, and wilderness first aid
• Receive weekly subsistence, housing, training, and transportation to and from the park, eligible for AmeriCorps grant.
• Fulfill graduate practicum requirements and/or receive credit
• Spend a summer working in a national park unit
• Apply and refine skills in data collection, literature review, risk assessment, technical writing, and presentation creation
• Have a direct impact on saving lives and enhance visitor experience in our parks
• Eligible for AmeriCorps award

Sample Projects
Design and implement youth programs for children of diverse backgrounds to enjoy parks safely
• Create an injury data collection system to investigate causes of injuries
• Perform visitor or employee risk assessment
• Draft a Park Emergency Response Plan
• Produce safety podcasts for visitors

Qualifications
• Excellent analytic and organizational skills
• Ability to take initiative and work independently
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Ability to work with a multi-disciplinary group
